Kootenai County denied the City of State Line’s Area of Impact request twice after the Board reviewed prior-year sheriff’s call costs of roughly $173,000. The public meetings, available on the county YouTube channel, show the majority requiring a plan to fund additional law-enforcement demand before expanding the planning boundary. Local media coverage of the sequence has been limited.
One email a week
I write about the things men actually turn over after 50 — food, money, tools, this town, and whatever is sitting in the chair that week. The letter is short.

Let’s Roast a Whole Chicken
A whole chicken turns a blank Sunday into a day with a job. Ed Bejarana on roasting a bird on the Ninja Woodfire with Lawry’s Perfect Blend Chicken & Poultry Rub: dry the skin, season it like you mean it, fill the pellet hopper, and leave it alone. The box is not a sermon about fire. Cold chicken on Monday is not leftovers. It is Sunday doing extra work for a house that did not need to look busy.

A Few Hundred Acres in Hayden
Hayden’s city council, the sheriff’s office, and the county commission are locked in a fight over the enhanced public-safety contract. A few hundred acres of undeveloped land near the Coeur d’Alene Airport could be acquired, a station built on part of it, and the rest leased to robotics and AI firms. Ground-lease revenue would service the debt and later fund the department, while giving deputies a lateral path and local schools a reason to aim higher.

One Engine Short, They Went Anyway
On Starship Flight 14 the ship left Starbase, lost one engine after the booster let go, and still reached orbit. It deployed twenty-six Starlink satellites, then came home early into Pacific water already cleared. Ed Bejarana sets that flight against NASA’s years of silence after Challenger and Columbia, and the older American habit of pointing the wagons west when the trail gets ugly.

The Pen Was the Easier Target
A note on the Hayden patrol column did not ask whether dedicated sheriff presence is a purchase, or whether a quieter street shows up in a house price. It asked whether a machine wrote the sentences, named a product, and treated a sound theme as unsafe to share. Authorship is not a rebuttal of the contract. The street does not read the byline.

The Lake I Can See From Here
In Ed Talks Stuff, Ed Bejarana writes about ten years beside Lake Coeur d’Alene after a 2016 move from the Portland area. The lake is not a postcard. For a man after 50 who already knew the runway was shorter, the water is ballast for the days and horsepower for the house: cash out later, or leave the kids a check that still means something. Finite shoreline. A real town. Scenery does not cash a check.

The List and the Answer
Siri AI vs Google search is not a gadget fight. In iOS 27, Siri answers in a spoken paragraph instead of handing you a list of links. Google still shows doors; the AI is a tour guide that already picked the building. For men over 50, voice helps in the truck—and fails when you cannot see the source. Use Siri for what lives on the phone. Keep the list for health, money, and news. Ask her. Then check.

When Governing Mattered: What Louise Shadduck Tells Us About Idaho Republicans
Louise Shadduck represented an Idaho Republicanism built around private enterprise, efficient government and practical results. Her career raises a timely question: When does limited government require restraint, and when must elected leaders act because local institutions may avoid decisions that protect shared values?

When “Just Do It” Became “Just Don’t”
Nike used to mean do the work. Now the stock is in the tank, the S&P 100 seat is gone, and the slogan that built the brand reads like a lecture. From Ed’s Chair: when a company forgets who writes the check, cancel culture stops being campus noise and starts wrecking livelihoods, juries, and a country that was built on disagreement.

Working Because You Want To
Somebody always asks when you are going to retire. They do not mean the date. They mean the costume. There is working because you have to, and working because you want to. From the outside they look identical: same truck, same phone. They are not the same life. Social Security is a floor, not a personality. After 50 the useful question is not if you are retired. It is who is writing the schedule.

After They Stopped Writing the Check
Hayden City Council voted not to renew its enhanced law-enforcement contract with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. The city can refuse dedicated patrol. What it cannot do is treat marked cars, faster response, and a tended street as a right after the check stops. Presence is a purchase. The unpaid bill moves onto traffic, property crime, home values, and the extra minute an ambulance waits.

Trade With Canada Is a Choice, Not a Necessity
Canada is an important American trading partner, but important doesn’t mean irreplaceable. America has the resources, technology, manufacturing capacity and economic strength to adapt when trade relationships change. Maybe we’d negotiate better agreements if we stopped acting as though America can’t survive without countries that depend heavily on access to our market.

The Password Problem
The password problem is not that you are careless. Official advice taught ordinary people to invent ugly unique strings, change them every 90 days, and never write them down. Most of us reused one good login instead. What works now: a password manager, passkeys where the site allows them, email as the master key, and a recovery plan the person who loves you can use. Four moves. Then the coffee.
